Omaha, Neb. - Elon sophomore Steven Hensley pitched a gem over Davidson as he collected a career-high 16 strikeouts to earn the Southeast Regional Performance of the Week. Over 8.0 innings pitched, he allowed no runs on just five hits while walking only one. The 16 strikeout effort marked the third time this season he has achieved a double digit strike out total. Hensley allowed just one runner past second base.
For the year, Hensley has recorded a SoCon-best 65 strikeouts in 49.2 innings of work. The sophomore is 5-1 with a 3.62 ERA in 2007. Opponents are hitting just .246 off of him.
In the West region, Nevada senior Ryan Rodriguez inched one victory shy of the schools career win total with his 8.0 inning, six-hit performance against New Mexico State. In the win, he collected a season-high 10 strikeouts. Out of the Midwest region, McNeese State lefty Chris Denton took care of Northwestern State with a 9.0 inning complete game, two-hit performance. He walked only one, while striking out nine. Eastern Michigan’s Jeff Fischer earned the schools first Great Lakes performance of the week award in his 9.0 inning no decision against Buffalo. Fischer scattered eight hits, allowing one unearned run, and striking out a career-high 14. Finally, the Northeast Regional Performance of the week honors go to Pittsburgh senior Paul Nardozzi who hurled a complete game, two-hit shutout over Notre Dame. Nardozzi struck out nine Fighting Irish hitters while walking only two to collect the win.
