KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- The 2008 Southern Conference Champion Elon Phoenix saw three of its players honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) with All-South honors on Thursday. Junior defender
Steven Kinney (Norcorss, Ga.) and junior forward
Justin Wyatt (Raleigh, N.C.) both collected Second Team honors while junior midfielder
Erfan Imeni (Burlington, N.C.) was selected to the Third Team.
For Kinney and Wyatt, this marks the second consecutive Second Team All-South distinction. It is the first time Imeni has been named. The Phoenix led the SoCon with three honorees while College of Charleston saw two players recognized. Appalachian State, UNC Greensboro and Furman all had one player honored.
Kinney claimed his second honor following a junior campaign in which he was named First Team All-SoCon and also earned a spot on the SoCon All-Tournament squad. He helped to anchor an Elon defense which recorded seven shutouts. Kinney finished the season with one goal and four assists.
Wyatt also picked up the NSCAA honor for the second time after a tremendous junior season. Wyatt finished the season with 13 goals and seven assists for 33 points. The 13 goals are tied for the most in a single season in program history while his 33 points also tie for the most in a year in program history. For his efforts, Wyatt was named the 2008 Southern Conference Player of the Year and was a First Team All-SoCon pick.
Imeni garnered his first NSCAA recognition after a junior season in which he landed First Team All-SoCon accolades. Imeni concluded the year with five goals and four assists for 14 total points. He netted a team-best four game-winning scores on the year.
Elon finished the 2008 season with a 10-9-1 overall record, but went 7-0-0 in SoCon play to capture its first-ever regular season title at the NCAA Division I level.
