Elon Drops Match At Campbell

Phoenix Falls 2-1 In Battle Of Top Two CAA South Teams

Box Score BUIES CREEK, N.C. – In a match between the top two teams in the CAA South standings, Campbell (9-4-4, 4-1-2) bested Elon (6-3-6, 3-1-3 CAA) at Eakes Athletics Complex on Saturday night, 2-1.

The Camels scored one goal in each half to hand Elon its first conference defeat of the campaign. Martin Kozak converted a penalty kick with 1:20 left to split Campbell's lead in half but the Phoenix could not find an equalizer.

The teams will occupy the top two spots in the division entering the final weekend of the CAA regular season.

How It Happened
  • Elon created a quality chance in the third minute off a corner kick. After Kozak crossed the ball into the box, Charlie Kitch headed it just over the net, almost scoring his second off a corner in Elon's last three matches.
  • In the 17th minute, Campbell drew a foul just outside the box to earn a free kick. Ethan Roberts took a shot on the set piece, beating Jackson Leavitt to the far post for the first goal of the contest.
  • Leavitt made a stop in the 43rd minute to preserve a one-goal deficit for the Phoenix entering halftime.
  • The Camels took six of the first seven shots after the break, the last of which resulted in a Filipe Matos goal in the 58th minute to make it 2-0 for Campbell.
  • Elon earned a penalty kick in the 89th minute that Kozak converted for his third of the season. Colin Veltri got off one more shot in the final minute for the Phoenix but it was blocked.

Notes & Numbers
  • Kozak's goal was his second of the season on a penalty kick, with the other coming against Davidson on Sept. 16. The midfielder has scored both of Elon's penalty kick goals this season and is now tied with Dominik Renz for the team lead with three goals on the campaign.
  • Connor Mucchetti and Kozak logged the full 90 minutes for Elon.
  • The Camels outshot Elon, 11-3.
  • Leavitt made four stops in goal for the Phoenix, including three in the second half.
  • Campbell finishes the regular season with a 1-0-1 edge over the Phoenix. The teams could meet for a third time in the CAA Tournament.
  • The loss snapped a streak of eight straight wins or draws for Elon in regular season CAA matches. It was Campbell's first victory against the Phoenix since joining the CAA.
  • Elon can still win the CAA South Division next Saturday with a win over William & Mary and a Campbell loss against UNCW.

Up Next
Elon will close the regular season next Saturday at Rudd Field against William & Mary. The Phoenix and Tribe tied 1-1 in their first meeting on Sept. 20.
