SoCon Selects Elon's James as Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Elon’s Brett James has been named the Southern Conference Player of the Week for all games December 16-22 the league office announced Tuesday (Dec. 23).  James helped Elon improve to 4-4 on the season with wins over Lees-McRae (81-52) and Lipscomb (79-76) last week. 

The Richmond, Va. native averaged 22.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game last week.  He also added four assists, four steals and two blocked shots who collected the first SoCon Player of the Week honor of his career.

James became just the 32nd member of Elon’s 1,000-point club with 16 points against Lees-McRae in just 23 minutes of action on Friday. He then scored a career-high 28 points in Elon’s 79-76 overtime win over Lipscomb on Monday (Dec. 22).  James went 4-for-8 from three-point range in the win, including a triple with 20 seconds left in overtime that gave the Phoenix a four-point cushion (78-74).  He connected on 57 percent of his field goal attempts (17-30) for the week.  

James is currently fifth in the SoCon in scoring (15.1 ppg) and ranks sixth in steals (1.9 spg).  His scoring total leads the team while he is also tied for the team lead with 5.1 rebounds per game.  James also paces the Phoenix in blocks (eight) and is tied for the team lead in steals (15).

Elon travels to face the Maryland Terrapins on December 30. The Phoenix, who is 1-1 in league play, returns to conference action on January 8, when Elon visits Appalachian State.

Other top performers in the Southern Conference included Appalachian State’s Kellen Brand, Chattanooga’s Stephen McDowell, The Citadel’s Austin Dahn, College of Charleston’s Andrew Goudelock, Georgia Southern’s Antonio Hanson, Samford’s Bryan Friday, Western Carolina’s Brandon Giles, and Wofford’s Junior Salters.
