ELON, N.C. -- After a perfect 9-0 start to the 2008 campaign, the Elon Phoenix baseball program has earned votes in two different national polls this week. Elon picked up votes in both the
USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll. This is the first time that Elon has received votes since the 2006 season when the Phoenix peaked at number 25 in the
Baseball America poll.
In the coaches' top-25 poll, the Phoenix garnered two points to rank as the 50th-best team in the nation. The NCBWA poll includes Elon in the "Others Receiving Votes" category, but does not specify the number of votes awarded to the Phoenix.
Elon's 9-0 start is the best for the program since moving to NCAA Division I play for the 2000 campaign. The nine-game winning streak is also the longest for the program since a 14-game span during the 2002 season.
Since the polls were announced, the Phoenix has improved to 10-0 and will go for win number 11 by hosting UNC Wilmington at 4 p.m. from Latham Park on March 5.
