TORRINGTON, Conn. - Catcher Mike Melillo and third baseman Chase Austin of the Elon baseball team have been named to the New England Collegiate Baseball League South Division All-Star team, it was announced today.
Melillo, who has started 21 games for the Newport Gulls is second on the team in hitting with a .360 batting average. On the season, he has 32 hits in 89 at bats, scoring 14 runs and driving in 22. Melillo also has two round-trippers.
Austin earns a spot on the All-Star roster after starting 20 games and batting a .244 clip for the Torrington Twisters. Austin has scored 14 runs on 21 hits in 86 at bats and has a .925 fielding percentage. He leads the team with four homeruns and has a team-best 16 RBI.
The NECBL will hold its 15th annual All-Star game July 20. at Fuessenich Park in Torrington, Conn., with the first pitch scheduled to be thrown at 6 p.m. There will also be a Skill Event and Home Run Derby before the game. All of the events will be broadcasted on TeamLine at www.necbl.com.
