Elon Ousts Bethune-Cookman for Fifth Win in Seven Matches

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.Anna Milian, Paige Kensrue, Elisa Simonetti, Lauren Sessoms and Hayley Wahl all posted singles victories, leading Elon to a 6-1 non-conference women’s tennis win over Bethune-Cookman – the Phoenix’s fifth triumph in seven contests – Thursday afternoon at the City Island Tennis Center.

Behind the singles success of Milian (over Katarina Szaboova 6-1, 6-4 at No. 1), Kensrue (over Monika Musilova 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2), Simonetti (over Eva Hankova 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3), Sessoms (over Valecia Kendrick 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5) and Wahl (over Jeneice Ward 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6), Elon improved to 9-8 on the season after opening the spring at 4-6.

The Phoenix seized the doubles point when Milian and Kensrue knocked off Musilova and Hankova 8-2 at No. 1 while Sessoms and Sally Wilkey outdueled Kendrick and Ward 9-7 at No. 3. The Wildcats (11-9) picked up wins at No. 2 doubles (Szaboova and Stacey Lopez over Simonetti and Laura Graybill 8-6) and No. 4 singles (Lopez over Wilkey 6-4, 6-0).

Milian (9-5), Kensrue (7-7), Simonetti, (12-4), Sessoms (4-0) and Wahl (3-0) all improved upon their already solid spring singles records via their victories at Bethune-Cookman. Elon will visit UNC Wilmington at 2 p.m. Tuesday for another non-league tilt. The Wildcats will host MEIAC rival Florida A&M for their next match Saturday, April 4.
