BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Anna Milian, Paige Kensrue, Elisa Simonetti, Melissa Wolf, Whitney Butcher and Daleen Kloppers all claimed singles victories while Milian, Kensrue, Wolf and Sally Wilkey all prevailed on the doubles scene as Elon topped Samford 7-0 in Southern Conference women’s tennis action Friday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.
“The match was so much tighter than the final score,” Phoenix coach Elizabeth Anderson said. “We were very fortunate to win the doubles point and there were several close singles matches. Our girls fought very hard against a very good Samford team. This is a great win for our team. We are really excited to get our first Southern Conference win of the season.”
Wilkey and Wolf received a victory by default at No. 3 doubles, but Andrie Meiring and Jessica Diamond upended Simonetti and Kloppers 8-3 at No. 2 to even the doubles standings for the Bulldogs (2-4 overall, 0-1 SoCon). Milian – the reigning SoCon Player of the Week – and Kensrue rallied past Taylor Morgan and Stephanie Parkison 9-8 (8-5) at No. 1 to give Elon (6-6 overall, 1-1 SoCon) the doubles point.
On the singles scene, Milian (over Morgan 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1), Kensrue (over Meiring 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 2), Simonetti (over Parkison 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3), Wolf (over Diamond 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4), Butcher (over Beth Erwin 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5) and Kloppers (by default at No. 6) then paced the Phoenix to a second triumph in as many matches. Elon visits SoCon foe Chattanooga at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Bulldogs will host Marquette at 1 p.m. Monday at the Samford Tennis Center.
