ELON, N.C. – Although play was delayed for much of the day due to inclement weather, the Elon women’s tennis team was able to open its fall season on Friday afternoon, hosting Longwood, Campbell and UNC Wilmington at the Elon Fall Invitational. Due to the rain, matches were played at both the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on campus and the Burlington Tennis Center. Elon sophomore Elisa Simonetti earned a straight set victory in singles and teamed with senior Anna Milian for a win in doubles action.
“I was extremely impressed with how our players stepped up today, especially because we have several players out with injuries,” commented Phoenix head coach Elizabeth Anderson. “The team’s determination and work ethic are paying off and this experience today is going to greatly help us heading into the spring season. We are looking forward to some great tennis tomorrow.”
Points are awarded to each individual competitor for victories based on the number of position they play in singles and doubles. The singles player and doubles tandem with the most points at the end of the tournament will be awarded as champions.
Elon scored two singles victories on Friday. Simonetti earned seven points for her 6-4, 6-3 win over UNC Wilmington’s Kayla Schwenk. Fellow sophomore Sally Wilkey battled back after dropping the first set for a 4-6, 6-3, 10-6 win over Hartley Collins of UNCW.
The Phoenix played three doubles matches during the first day of competition. Simonetti and Milian earned the lone Elon victory, an 8-4 win over Schwenk and Christina Riley.
Competition resumes on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
