SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon senior Molly Calpin was honored as the Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for all games played from September 22-28. The forward netted two game-winning goals last week as Elon opened league play 2-0-0 with victories over Wofford and Furman.
“Molly is very deserving of this award,” stated Elon head coach Chris Neal. “She was coming off an injury last week and had not trained nor played for 10 days prior to the Wofford and Furman matches. She has a will to win and to provide for this team that is unmatched. I am extremely proud of her resolve.”
With the score knotted at one against Wofford on Friday evening, Calpin tallied the game’s final marker in the 77th minute to lift the Phoenix past the Terriers. It was the first win for Elon in a SoCon opener since it joined the conference. Calpin followed that performance by knocking in the winner with just 17 seconds remaining in the final overtime to give Elon a 2-1 victory over Furman on Sunday. The win marked the first time in program history that Elon defeated the Paladins.
Calpin leads the team with three goals and six points on the season.
Elon (6-2-1, 2-0-0) will play its next three games on the road, beginning with a bout at Georgia Southern on Friday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m.
