ELON, N.C. – The Elon men’s tennis team earned its first-ever top-25 rating for its 2010 recruiting class according to the Winter Recruiting Class Rankings recently released by tennisrecruiting.net. The Phoenix’s 2010 recruiting class, which includes Cameron Silverman, Wesley Barrett and Andrew Prince, is rated 22nd on the list that consists of teams such as Georgia, Duke, and UCLA. Elon is the lone Southern Conference team in the top 25.
“I am excited about the recruiting class of 2010,” said Elon head men’s tennis coach Michael Leonard. “It is the first class at Elon to be ranked in the top 25 nationally. I look forward to the impact they will have on our tennis program in the future.”
Duke headlines the chart, receiving 15 first-place votes after signing two blue chip and one five-star recruits. UCLA, Michigan, Georgia and Notre Dame round out the top five. Elon has one five-star recruit in Silverman who currently ranks 37th nationally and second in the state of New York. He has five Eastern Sectional titles to his credit. Barrett and Prince are both four-star recruits. Barrett, the top-ranked player in the state of North Carolina, is rated 98th in the country and Prince is listed 144th in the national ranks.
Leonard has also recently taken on an additional role with collegiate tennis, now serving as the Division I National Tournament Region Chair for the Carolina Region. In this role, he helps determine the participants and the seeding for the ITA Regional Tournament. Along with other National Committee representatives, Leonard votes on major issues in college tennis and year-end award winners.
The men’s tennis seem recently kicked off its season against the 19th-ranked Duke Blue Devils. Elon will face off against East Tennessee State on Saturday, January 30 at noon in Williamsburg, Va.
