Day Breaks Record at Third Straight Meet

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Veronica Day broke her own school record in the triple jump for the third time in as many meets with a distance of 38’4” at the Vince Brown Invitational on the campus of Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va. The 4x400-meter relay team, made up of Day, Melissa Turowski, Amy Salek and Jennine Strange, also took home a title with a time of 4:05.11.

Day earned her third top-three finish with a mark of 18’4 ¼” in the long jump. Also finishing in the top-five in the long jump was Monique Vines, who placed fourth, with a distance of 17’5 ¼”. Lauren Hawkesworth came in eighth with mark of 16’4 ½”.

In the mile run, Emily Tryon and Morgan Denecke finished fourth and fifth with times if 5:15.48 and 5:16.05, respectively.

Amanda Rice was the fourth-best collegian in the 55-meter hurdles, finishing in 8.66 seconds.

In the 55-meter dash, Day crossed the finish line in 7.51 seconds, the sixth-best collegiate time. Dana Cataldo finished just behind Day with a time of 7.52 seconds.

In the 400-meter dash, Turowski earned the seventh-best collegiate time, finishing the race in 1:01.63. Amy Salek crossed the line as the eighth-best collegian, running a 1:01.84.

Strange earned the fifth-best collegiate time in the 800-meter run, clocking a 2:19.70.

Rounding out Elon’s top finishers was Justine Robertson in the shot put with a distance of 40’3” 

Rachel Banner recorded a height of 5’2 ¼” in the high jump, good for a third-place finish. Jordan Lee reached the same height, but on more attempts for a fifth-place finish in the high jump.

The Phoenix tracksters will return to action next weekend when they travel to Lynchburg, Va., for the Liberty Invitational.
