Spring Season Continues for Phoenix Women’s Soccer

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Elon women’s soccer team continued its 2010 offseason training with exhibition games against Charlotte and Liberty this past Saturday at the BB&T Classic. The Phoenix scored its first goals of the spring with a strike in each contest, but fell by scores of 2-1 to both the 49ers and the Flames.

The Phoenix scored first against Charlotte, going on top on a Brittany Hallberg goal in the first half. Charlotte tied it up just before the break when Elon was unable to make a solid clearance on the ball and the nationally-ranked 49ers took advantage. Charlotte built off the momentum and got the go-ahead goal just a minute into the final period. Elon was unable to capitalize on any of its second-half chances.

In the second contest, Elon’s Alanna Winsper hit the post on a breakaway early in the first half. Liberty scored just minutes later after getting behind the Phoenix defense on the left side. Elon made an adjustment to its back line and kept the Flames’ attack at bay.

Kyle Waggoner had a strong game for the Phoenix, making numerous runs behind the Liberty defense. It paid off midway through the second half when Waggoner sent a cross to Megan Braun for a tap-in goal to tie the score.

Although Elon dominated the attack for the majority of the final period, Liberty countered with three minutes left in the game and scored on its first shot on goal of the half. As the final minute ticked down, a Waggoner shot nearly found the back of the net before a Liberty defender knocked it away just before it rolled over the goal line.

Elon will play its final two games of the spring at Rudd Field. The Phoenix battles reigning Southern Conference champion UNC Greensboro on Wednesday, April 14 at 7 p.m. before hosting NC State on Saturday, April 24.
