ELON, N.C. -- Cyle Rasmus, a transfer from Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Fla., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball for the Elon Phoenix next season announced head coach
Mike Kennedy. Rasmus, a 5-10, 170-pound shortstop, enters Elon as a junior.
A native of Phenix City, Ala., Rasmus hit .323 with 57 runs scored, 11 doubles, a triple, five homers and 25 RBI during his sophomore season with the Commodores. He also stole 24 bases in 27 attempts, including going a perfect 3-for-3 in steals in his final game of the season. In a game against Kalamazoo Community College, Rasmus went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and tied a career-high with four RBI.
In Rasmus' freshman campaign he compiled a .287 batting average while scoring 39 times. He added nine doubles and five home runs and drove in 27 runs. On the base paths Rasmus was successful on 26 of his 28 stolen base attempts. He began his career by going 2-for-4 with two solo homers against Young Harris College.
As a prep at Russell County High School, Rasmus hit .379 with 72 hits, 71 runs scored, 18 doubles, 10 home runs and 37 stolen bases as a senior. That season the program compiled a 44-11 record and earned a state runner-up finish. A Birmingham News All-State selection, Rasmus helped the team to a 38-1 record as a freshman.
Cyle is the son of Tony and Robin Rasmus and the brother of current St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Colby. His brother Cory was a first-round selection of the Atlanta Braves and currently pitches for the Rome Braves.
