Women’s Soccer Drops 3-2 Decision at Chattanooga

Box Score

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –
The Elon University women’s soccer team dropped its first Southern Conference game of the season on Sunday afternoon, as the Phoenix fell, 3-2, to the Chattanooga Lady Mocs at Finley Stadium.

Elon drops to 6-3-1 on the year and 1-1 in the SoCon, while the Lady Mocs improve to 3-7 and 1-1 in league play.

“We played well today, but Chattanooga was clinical on the counter attack in the second half,” said Elon head women’s soccer coach Chris Neal. “We had a number of chances to score but it just wasn’t our day.”

Senior midfielder Alanna Winsper netted her second goal in as many games and third of the season for the Phoenix, with freshman Olivia Mackey picking up her third assist of the season.

Elon’s only other goal versus Chattanooga happened in the 55th minute on a Lady Mocs own goal to make it a 2-2 game.

After a Winsper shot missed wide in the 62nd minute, the Chattanooga offense pushed down the field to score the go-ahead goal early in the 64th minute, as a Donna-Kay Henry strike landed in the net past Elon sophomore keeper Kristen Haney to make it a 3-2 game. Haney played all 90 minutes and finished with five saves.

The Phoenix tallied five more shots in the remaining minutes, including back-to-back strikes from freshman Chelsey Stark and sophomore #Claire O’Keeffe# in the 69th minute. But the Lady Mocs held strong, managing to escape the contest with the win and hand Elon its first SoCon loss of the season.

The victory for the Lady Mocs puts them even at 4-4 versus Elon in the all-time series. In its last two games at Chattanooga, Elon is being outscored by a thin margin, 5-3. Conversely, Elon has outscored Chattanooga, 12-2, at Rudd Field the last two meetings.

Elon will play its next four matches at home, beginning on Friday, Oct. 1, when the Phoenix take on Davidson at 7 p.m.
