Mt. Pleasant, S.C. – A header by
Matt Wescoe in the 24th minute was the difference as the Elon men’s soccer team spoiled senior night for the College of Charleston Cougars with a 1-0 victory at Patriot’s Point in Southern Conference action on Tuesday night. The goal was the third by Wescoe in as many games for the Phoenix (6-9-1, 2-4-0).
Elon has won four of the last five matches against CofC (5-7-4, 1-3-2) and both of the Phoenix’s Southern Conference victories this year have come on the road.
“We worked hard and defended well against a strong Charleston team,” noted Elon head coach
Darren Powell. “It is good to earn three points on the road and now we have to prepare for another big game Saturday night against UNCG where we will recognize our seniors.”
With the first of six corner kicks on the night for Elon, junior
Gabe Latigue served a great ball in the box and Wescoe tucked in the lone goal of the evening from about six yards out. The assist was Latigue’s sixth of the year, tying him for the most in the Southern Conference. The midfielder ranks second on the team with 10 points.
College of Charleston outshot Elon 13-6 and held the 9-6 edge in corner kicks, but the Phoenix played outstanding defense with keeper
Reed Dillard corralling six shots in the victory. CofC goalie Kees Heemskerk was credited with three stops.
Elon will recognize eight seniors prior to its final home game of the regular season on Saturday night. The Phoenix will challenge local rival UNCG at Rudd Field at 7 p.m.
