Men’s Soccer Earns First SoCon Win of the Season with Shutout at Wofford

Box Score

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Elon Phoenix scored two second-half goals en route to a 2-0 victory over the host Wofford Terriers at Snyder Field in a Southern Conference men’s soccer tilt on Tuesday night. Both goals came off headers in the box on set pieces as the Phoenix (3-6-1, 1-1-0) secured its first league victory of the year. Wofford fell to 3-6-1 overall and 0-2-0 in league action.

“It is a good feeling to win on the road in the Southern Conference,” commented head coach Darren Powell. “It was good to get points in the league today with this win at Wofford. We put in a solid performance to earn the victory and now we look forward to our next SoCon game this Saturday at home against Davidson.”

The teams were scoreless after 45 minutes of play, despite Elon holding a 7-3 edge in the shot column in the opening half. In the 59th minute, the Phoenix was awarded one of its six corner kicks on the evening. Junior Gabe Latigue served the ball into the box where Archie Karpeh went up for the header and the ball deflected into the back of the net.

Elon continued to pressure the goal and in the 82nd minute was rewarded for its efforts. It was near déjà vu, this time with Danny Lovitz serving a free kick into the box from the left side of the field. Again it was Karpeh who got in the air and the deflected ball found the net from just a few yards out to give the Phoenix the 2-0 advantage and pad the lead.

Elon owned a 10-5 edge in the shot column, registering six shots on goal compared to only two by the Terriers. The visitors also earned six corner kicks while Wofford managed only one.

Phoenix keeper Nathan Dean made two saves in the contest while Wofford’s Andrew Drennan stopped four shots.

Elon will look for back-to-back league victories when the Phoenix hosts the Davidson Wildcats at Rudd Field on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
