MT. PLEASANT, S.C. –
The College of Charleston Cougars scored in the 87th minute to break a late second-half tie and hand the Elon University women’s soccer team a 2-1 setback on Friday night, Oct. 7, at Patriots Point.

Elon drops to 3-6-4 on the year and 1-2-2 in the Southern Conference, while College of Charleston improves to 8-5-0 (4-1-0).

“It was a good and entertaining game tonight and the team’s effort was fantastic,” said Elon head coach Chris Neal. “College of Charleston is a good team. We need to put tonight's match behind us and focus on the chance to get three points on the road on Sunday.”

Sophomore Catherine Brinkman scored Elon’s lone goal, as a yellow card in the box on CofC in the 53rd minute gave the Phoenix a penalty kick and a chance to tie. Brinkman converted the attempt after blasting the shot into the top left corner to make it a 1-1 match.

After the game was seemingly headed to overtime late in regulation, the Cougars put across a score in the 87th minute after Sarah Cardamone headed in a ball inside the box on the right side of the field to put Elon behind late, 2-1, and all but seal the match.

Rookie Kate Murphy and junior Shannon Cosgrove split time between the posts for the Phoenix. Murphy registered two saves in 45 minutes, while Cosgrove tallied two saves in the final 45 minutes of the match.

Elon had two opportunities early to break a scoreless tie and score the match’s first goal, but fell just short. Sophomore Chelsey Stark had a good look at a header off a Phoenix corner kick in the 10th minute, but CofC keeper Cricket Wise came up with the stop. Brinkman nearly put Elon on top in the 19th minute after sprinting in the middle of the box to challenge Wise, but the CofC keeper came up with the possession.

Brinkman nearly scored again in the 29th minute after breaking off from a Charleston defender on the left side of the field, but her shot landed just a bit high to keep it scoreless.

Following a Cougars goal in the 50th minute by Francesca Kentimenos, the Phoenix received a penalty kick in the 53rd minutes after a CofC defender took down Stark in the box. Brinkman managed to blast the PK into the top left corner for the goal to make it a 1-1 game.

Elon and CofC were even at intermission in the shots taken at four apiece, but the Cougars out shot the Phoenix 6-3 in the final 45 minutes to finish with a 10-7 advantage in shots.

Elon completes a four-match road swing on Sunday, Oct. 9, when it takes on The Citadel.
