Long, Troutman Garner All-Conference Honors

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Elon senior Chris Long was named to the 10-member 2010-11 All-Southern Conference Men’s Basketball team as voted on by the league’s head coaches. Rookie Lucas Troutman was honored on the conference’s all-freshman team. Earning the recognition for the first time in his career, Long is the first Phoenix player to be named to the Coaches Team since Brett James in 2008. Elon had not had a player named to the SoCon All-Freshman team since James in 2006.

Long had the best year of his four-year career in 2010-11, leading the team with 14.7 points per game while also averaging a league best 5.9 assists per game. His assist numbers currently rank 18th in the nation. With 509 career assists, Long ranks second all-time in Elon’s career record book and his 169 helpers this season are fifth on the school’s single-season list. The native of Charleston, W.Va., became the 33rd Elon player to eclipse the 1,000-pt plateau when he knocked in a free throw at UNC Greensboro on January 10th. The point guard has scored 1,197 points during his time in the maroon and gold. Long left his mark on Elon in his final game in Alumni Gym, pouring in a career high 30 points while added 10 assists to help the Phoenix defeat UNCG on Senior Night. He was honored as the league’s player of the week following that performance. Long also earned the label of “Mr. Broadway” in early January when he drove the court in the final seconds at Columbia and hit the game-winner to lift the Phoenix to a 70-69 victory in its first game of the New Year. Elon’s backcourt leader will finish his career in the school’s top five in three-pointers (currently 170), assists and steals (currently 151).

Troutman had a stellar rookie season, coming on strong as the season progressed. The SoCon block leader with 1.6 a game, Troutman came off the bench to average 8.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. With 46 blocks so far this season, the big man is tied for fifth on Elon’s single-season list. Troutman netted double figures in five of the last seven games for the Phoenix, having a career night against Western Carolina on Feb. 2. The Belton, S.C. native dumped in 23 points while adding nine rebounds and blocking four shots. Troutman has had at least one block in 23 contests and has had three or more on six occasions.

Seeded fourth in the North Division, Elon is slated to take on The Citadel (No. 5 South) on Friday, March 4 in Chattanooga, Tenn. in the opening round of the conference tournament. Tip time is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. from McKenzie Arena.
