SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After a stellar senior season in the maroon and gold, Elon’s
Chris Long was recognized on the All-Southern Conference second team as selected by The Southern Conference Sports Media Association. Long also earned all-league honors from the conference’s coaches. Phoenix freshman
Jack Isenbarger earned a spot on the five-member media all-freshman team.
Long led the Phoenix and ranked ninth in the SoCon with 14.7 points per game while also averaging a league-best 5.9 assists per game. His assist numbers currently rank 18th in the nation. With 509 career assists, Long ranks second all-time in Elon’s career record book and his 169 helpers this season are fifth on the school’s single-season list. The native of Charleston, W.Va., became the 33rd Elon player to eclipse the 1,000-pt plateau when he knocked in a free throw at UNC Greensboro on January 10th. The point guard has scored 1,197 points during his time in the maroon and gold. Long left his mark on Elon in his final game in Alumni Gym, pouring in a career high 30 points while added 10 assists to help the Phoenix defeat UNCG on Senior Night. He was honored as the league’s player of the week following that performance. Long also earned the label of “Mr. Broadway” in early January when he drove the court in the final seconds at Columbia and hit the game-winner to lift the Phoenix to a 70-69 victory in its first game of the New Year. Elon’s backcourt leader will finish his career in the school’s top five in three-pointers (currently 170), assists and steals (currently 151).
Isenbarger made his mark early in the season, opening his collegiate career with 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting at South Carolina. He followed that with a career-best 29 points versus College of New Jersey. The Zionsville, Ind. native poured in 23 points while grabbing six rebounds against ACC foe Maryland and dumped in an impressive 21 points against defending national champion and top-ranked Duke. Isenbarger ranks third on the team with 10.3 points per game and has made a team-high 55 three-pointers coming off the bench for the Phoenix.
Seeded fourth in the North Division, Elon is slated to take on The Citadel (No. 5 South) on Friday, March 4 in Chattanooga, Tenn. in the opening round of the conference tournament. Tip time is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. from McKenzie Arena.
