On Deck
Elon will begin an eight-game homestand this weekend against Wofford. The SoCon set opens on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Latham Park.
Nearing 500
In his 15th season as the Elon skipper,
Mike Kennedy is closing in on milestone win number 500. Already Elon’s all-time winningest coach, Kennedy boasts a career record of 493-342-3 (.590).
Closing it Out
Since 2007 Elon has been very good at closing out games. The Phoenix has gone a combined 148-12 (.925) when leading after seven innings and 152-13 (.921) when holding a lead following the eighth inning.
Slammed
Sophomore first baseman
Grant McCoury belted the first grand slam of his Elon career in Elon’s 9-4 victory over Old Dominion on April 5. The shot proved to be the game-winning hit as the Phoenix trailed 2-1 at the time. It was also the first grand slam of the year for Elon.
Collecting 200
Senior infielder
Neal Pritchard had two hits in Elon’s 9-4 win over Old Dominion on April 5, pushing his career total to 200. Number 200 was a RBI single to left in the bottom of the eighth inning. That performance left Pritchard just three hits shy of moving into a tie for 10th on the program’s all-time hits chart.
Homestanding
Following the make-up game with East Carolina, Elon will play eight consecutive games at Latham Park. It marks the longest homestand since the Phoenix played 10 straight at home from Feb. 27-March 11, 2008.
What a Difference a Year Makes
As is the case at most programs across the country, Elon’s offensive numbers have dropped off while pitching numbers are better. Most of that is due to the new NCAA bat regulations.
The most notable differences for Elon through 29 games: batting average is down .044 points (.304-.260), runs are down by 67 (264-197), hits are down 69 (330-261) and homers are down by 24 (42-18), ERA is down by 1.22 points (6.08-4.86), hits allowed are down 40 (325-285), runs allowed are down by 26 (208-182) and opponent's are hitting .026 points less (.296-.270).
400
Elon’s 6-2 victory over Wright State on March 5 marked the 400th win of the program’s tenure at the NCAA Division I level. Elon’s first year of Division I play was the 2000 season.
