DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Elon University women’s tennis team won its second straight Southern Conference match on Sunday, March 11, defeating the Davidson Wildcats, 6-1, at the Covington Tennis Courts.
Elon improves to 11-4 on the year and 2-1 in league play, while the ‘Cats fall to 3-7 (0-1 SoCon) with the setback.
After winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 match lead, the Phoenix continued its dominance in singles.
Frida Jansaker, who was victorious earlier in the match in doubles with
Jordan Johnston, won her 10th straight match against Davidson with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Katharine Dicconson. Johnston was victorious at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Stephani Synn. Johnston and Jansaker are 12-2 on the year in doubles.
Viviana Stavreva played outstanding at No. 3 singles, as the sophomore claimed a 6-0, 6-1 win over Nisha Crouser. Stavreva improved to 9-4 on the year with the win.
Maria Camara Ruiz and
Briana Berne helped seal the win for the Phoenix at No. 4 and 5 with a pair of wins over Elise Held and Catherine Wood. Camara Ruiz recorded a 6-4, 6-1 decision, while Berne registered a 6-1, 6-2 victory. The duo was also victorious in doubles earlier in the day, claiming a dominant 8-1 win over Held/Wood. Berne/Camara Ruiz have reeled off nine straight in doubles.
In exhibition doubles,
Katy Canada and
Kaylyn Smialek topped Davidson's Blake Nickles and Held. Smialek was also on the winning end of a 6-4, 7-5 victory in exhibition singles versus Tamara Hill.
Elon plays its next two matches on the road, beginning with a trip to Birmingham, Ala., on March 18 to face the Samford Bulldogs. The Phoenix then travels to Chattanooga, Tenn., to face the UTC Lady Mocs on March 20.
