Clark Pitches Elon to 2-1 Victory Over The Citadel

Box Score

ELON, N.C. --
Dylan Clark threw a career-long 8.1 innings, scattering four hits, to lead the Elon Phoenix to a 2-1 victory over The Citadel in Southern Conference baseball action on Wednesday night at Latham Park.

Clark, who did not walk a batter and faced just three over the minimum, improved to 9-3 on the season while the Phoenix upped its mark to 29-24 overall and 18-10 in SoCon play.  Nate Young set down the final two hitters to garner his ninth save of the season.  The victory also assured the maroon and gold of a top-four seed in the upcoming league tournament.

Elon took advantage of a Bulldog error in the third to grab a 1-0 lead.  With Chris Bresnahan on second, Sebastian Gomez grounded to third, but the throw to first was off the mark and Bresnahan scored.

The Citadel (24-29, 13-15) evened the score in the top of the fifth with a Grant Richards sac fly.

The Phoenix answered right away, again using a Bulldog miscue to secure its final run.  With two down and Eric Serra on first, an errant pick-off throw moved the speedster to second.  Quinn Bower's soft single to right followed and Serra raced home with the winning run.

Despite earning a complete game, The Citadel's Austin Pritcher (6-5) took the loss.  He surrendered five hits and walked three in his eight frames.

Bower notched two of Elon's five hits on the night.  Elon's Ryan Kinsella went 0-for-3 to snap his career-long 14-game hit streak.

The pitcher's duel sailed by with the game being completed in just one hour and 54 minutes.

The two teams will play game two of this three-game set on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.
