ELON, N.C. -- With the second two-a-day on the preseason calendar scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 14, the Elon Phoenix football team hit the Hunt and Tucker practice fields a little before 8:30 a.m. for the first session of the day.
One notable change during the morning came in a position change as former quarterback
Blake Rice transitioned to wide receiver. Said head coach
Jason Swepson of the move, "It's a move we have made for the season. We'll re-evaluate it after the season. Blake is too athletic to be a number three quarterback. We're trying to get our best guys on the field and, with his athletic ability, he's going to help us not only on offense, but on special teams. He's excited about it."
Here are the rest of Swepson's thoughts following the morning workout:
Swepson on Sunday's scrimmage after reviewing the film:
"I think our effort is there and that showed on film. These kids like to play football. We have to get our center snaps fixed, and we've been working on that the last couple of days both pre and post practice. We still have to tackle a little bit better on defense. Overall, we were all pleased with the effort, the will and the 'want-to'. Now we just have to clean up some things."
Swepson on the schedule over the upcoming days:
"These next three days are going to tell us a lot about our team. We have five practices in three days. We told them not to concern themselves with anything except practice over the next three days because they have a grind ahead of them."
Swepson on the health of the team:
"We're banged up on the offensive line. But right now its mostly just bumps and bruises. There are a couple of strains, but that's typical for this point of camp. There's nothing really season-ending or that will force guys to miss the first game. We just have to get through these next few days and then we'll work on getting their bodies back."
Swepson on the team's attitude after the first scrimmage:
"Monday was supposed to be a day off, but we had to tweak the schedule because of the rain last week. They came out with a good attitude last night and we had a real good practice this morning. They understand how important these next few days are. They are going to test their minds and bodies."
Swepson on Tuesday's evening session:
"We'll be in full pads and we'll bang a little bit. We're going to pop the pads. We want to see them fight through. I'm anxious to see these next four practices."
