Â

Catherine Brinkman,
Jennifer McGorty and
Kimmie Krauss were each selected to the league's All-Tournament team.
"Hats off to (Furman's) India Robinson," said Elon head coach
Chris Neal. "She made a great play on the ball and scored an absolutely phenomenal goal (in the 79
th minute). It was a great individual effort that changed the game.
Â
"I thought it was a harsh ending for our team that worked extremely hard to get here and played well during the game."
Furman was the first team to score in the 20
th minute of the match. The Paladins' Stephanie DeVita received a pass from Hannah Stanifer and connected on a shot from 15 yards away at the top of the box to put Furman up 1-0.
The Phoenix answered with the equalizer in the 24
th minute as McGorty scored her eighth goal of the season. The senior from Summerfield, N.C., cleaned up a rebound on a shot from
Nicole Dennion that the keeper failed to corral cleanly to even the match at 1-all.
The Paladins nearly responded with the go-ahead score just seconds later, but Elon keeper
Sydney Branson stopped DeVita's attempt. The Phoenix also survived a few frantic moments between the 28
th and 30
th minute as Branson corralled Claire Sullivan's attempt followed by the maroon and gold defense blocking the follow-up by Stanifer.
Elon would have one more attempt for a score prior to the half, but Brinkman's try was stopped by the Furman keeper and the teams went into the half knotted at 1-1.
The Phoenix held a 9-7 advantage on shots in the opening stanza with both teams each having four attempts on frame. Elon also had a slight 3-2 lead in corners during the first period.
Both teams continued to play evenly during the majority of the second 45 minutes of play. In the 62
nd minute, Furman was on the attack as Paladins' Jamie Alexander drove a ball towards the right side of the goal, but keeper
Kate Murphy was there to make a great diving stop.
The Phoenix almost took a 2-1 lead five minutes later as
Samantha Burch had an opportunity to place the ball in the back of the net, but her attempt went wide from the right side of the box.
In the 79
th minute, Furman went ahead on Robinson's goal from 28 yards out. The ball sailed over Murphy and into the net to put Furman up 2-1.
The Phoenix continued to battle for the equalizer, but saw the Paladins add to their lead in the 85
th minute. Alexander connected on a score from 20 yards after the ball deflected off an Elon defender and into the goal for a 3-1 advantage.
The maroon and gold continued to look to trim the lead, but was unable to tally any legitimate attacks over the final five minutes of action.
Branson and Murphy split time between the posts for the Phoenix, combining for six saves. Furman's Rose Hull played all 90 minutes in goal and had four saves.
Elon ended the match with a 16-13 advantage in shots over the Paladins, but Furman had nine shots on frame compared to five for the Phoenix. Both teams were even in corners with four apiece.
