Elon-UNCG Series History
Elon and UNC Greensboro have squared off 41 times prior to this Southern Conference series with Elon holding a 21-12 edge. The two teams first met on April 2, 1991 with Elon earning an 11-9 victory in Greensboro. Elon and UNCG have met at least once every season since 1999. The Phoenix swept the three-game set in Elon in 2012, but dropped two of the three games in 2011 – the last meeting at UNCG Baseball Stadium.
Hokie Streaks Snapped
Prior to falling to Elon 4-3 at Latham Park on March 13, the Virginia Tech Hokies had won 21 straight mid-week non-conference games. The last defeat came to Radford on March 29, 2011. The Hokies had also won their last 14 mid-week non-league road games, with the last loss coming on April 22, 2009 at Liberty.
ACC Foes
Elon has already taken on three members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, currently the highest rated league in the nation, this season. The Phoenix has gone 2-1 in those contests, picking up victories over NC State (ranked #8 at the time) and Virginia Tech (receiving votes at the time). The lone loss came on opening weekend against Boston College. Elon still has five games remaining against ACC opponents as the maroon and gold will play NC State again and play a home-and-home with both North Carolina and Wake Forest.
Thievery
A hallmark of Elon teams under
Mike Kennedy has been their ability to steal bases. The 2013 team is no different. The Phoenix has been successful in 31 of its 35 stolen base attempts this year and is a perfect 14-for-14 in SoCon play. Of the five players who have attempted at least four steals on the year, only two have been thrown out. Leading the way is sophomore
Quinn Bower who is 10-for-10 in steal attempts, while both
Sebastian Gomez (5-for-5) and
Antonio Alvarez (5-for-6) have swiped five bags.

Senior
Alex Swim was one of 48 catchers named to the watch list for the 2013 Johnny Bench Award presented by BaseballSavings.com on March 11. He was one of two SoCon backstops on the list (Adam Martin of Western Carolina was the other). This is the second year in a row that Swim has been named to the watch list for this prestigious award.
The Johnny Bench Award is presented annually to the top catcher at the NCAA Division I ranks and will be updated until May 6. Semifinalists will be announced on May 16 before three finalists are announced on June 4.
550
With Elon’s 3-2, 10-inning victory over College of Charleston on March 8, Elon head coach
Mike Kennedy picked up career win number 550. Kennedy is Elon’s all-time winningest coach and has spent his entire 17-year career as a head coach at his alma mater.
Tough to K
Last season, catcher
Alex Swim was one of the toughest hitters in the nation to strike out. Swim fanned just 13 times in 241 at bats during his junior campaign. He ranked 12th nationally with one K in every 18.5 at bats. This year, Swim has struck out seven times in 71 at bats (once every 10.1 at bats).
Another Elon player has been tough to fan this year –
Sebastian Gomez. Gomez has struck out just twice in 62 at bats (once every 31.0 at bats).
