Phoenix Falters Late Against College of Charleston

Box Score ELON, N.C. -- The College of Charleston Cougars rallied late, erasing a 4-0 deficit, to hand the Elon Phoenix an 11-6 setback in game two of a three-game Southern Conference baseball series from Latham Park on Saturday afternoon.

Elon (7-6, 2-3 SoCon) scored first for just the second time this season during a four-run second.  With runners on first and second, Antonio Alvarez grounded a ball up the middle that was fielded by the Cougar shortstop.  He stepped on second to record the first out, but threw the ball away at first, allowing the first Elon run to score.  After a single and stolen base put men at second and third with two outs, Blaine Bower drove home two with a single through the left side.  His brother Quinn Bower then drove him home from with a single up the middle.

CofC (9-6, 1-1) was shut down by Elon starter Kyle Webb until the sixth inning.  The Cougars loaded the bases with two outs before a pop-up was dropped, allowing two runs to score to make it a 4-2 contest.  Elon got one back in the bottom half on an Alvarez sacrifice fly.

Charleston's big inning came in the seventh.  The Cougars struck for six runs on four hits and used three walks and a hit batter to their advantage in the frame.  The first run scored on a bases-loaded walk before Gunnar Heidt was plunked to force in another run as the Phoenix lead was cut to 5-4.  Brandon Murray followed with a two-RBI single through the right side as CofC grabbed the lead at 6-5.  Two more runs would come across in the seventh and CofC led 8-5 at the stretch.

With Charleston leading 11-5 heading to the last of the ninth, the Phoenix tried to rally.  Chris King, Casey Jones, Quinn Bower and Sam Paone drew four consecutive walks to start the inning and make it an 11-6 contest.  Michael Hanzlik did not allow any further damage to occur, however, as he struck out the next two hitters before recording the final out on a foul ball to the catcher.

Webb gave Elon its second consecutive outstanding starting pitching performance.  The senior allowed two unearned runs on just three hits in six innings.  He struck out a career-high 10 hitters.  Four Elon relievers combined to allow nine runs on five hits and eight walks.

Taking the loss was Andrew MacDonald (3-1).  MacDonald was charged with three runs on three hits in one-third of an inning.

The win went to Blake Ross (1-0).  Ross tossed 2.2 scoreless innings out of the pen for the Cougars.

The rubber match of this key SoCon series is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. first pitch at Latham Park on Sunday.
