Box Score LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- In front of a crowd of 4,573, the third-largest in Patterson Stadium history, the Elon Phoenix jumped on top of eighth-ranked Louisville only to see the Cardinals rally to claim a 7-5 victory over the maroon and gold in game two of a three-game baseball series.
Elon (20-17) roughed up Louisville (27-7) starter Jeff Thompson as he departed after just 2.2 innings. The Phoenix scored all five runs off of Thompson who had allowed only three earned runs all season and began the day with a 0.51 ERA.
With one out in the top of the first,
Alex Swim moved in to 10th place on Elon's career doubles list as he lined the 42nd two-bagger of his career to left-center. That was followed by
Ryan Kinsella jacking his 13th homer of the season, this one clearing the wall in right, to put the Phoenix on top 2-0. The shot also extended the junior's hitting streak to 14 games, matching a career-long hit streak.
Louisville grabbed a 3-2 lead in the last of the inning when Ty Young hit a three-run shot to right only to see the maroon and gold come right back in the second. After
Quinn Bower drew a walk to begin the top of the second,
Danny Lynch unloaded on a Thompson pitch and sent it over the wall in right-center to make it a 4-2 game.
Elon added one to its lead in the third when, with runners on the corners,
Chris King stole second and Swim stole home.
With Elon holding a 5-4 lead going into the last of the eight, Louisville mounted its comeback. The rally began with a throwing error that allowed Adam Engel to get to second base. After a sacrifice bunt moved Engel to third, Coco Johnson tripled down the right field line to tie the game at five. Young then drove home Johnson with a line drive up the middle. Another single put runners on the corners before another sac bunt made it a 7-5 game.
Spencer Medick (5-2) suffered the loss after being charged with six runs (five earned) on nine hits in 7.1 innings. He did not walk a batter.
Cody Ege (2-1) was the winner after he got the final two outs of the eighth. Kyle McGrath kept Louisville in the game with 4.2 shutout innings in relief of Thompson. Nick Burdi threw a perfect ninth to collect his sixth save of the year.
The Phoenix will look to close out the series with a victory on Sunday at 1 p.m.
