Citadel Snaps Eight-Game Losing Skid to Elon

Box Score CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Elon stranded 11 runners and was unable to take full advantage of four errors by The Citadel as the Bulldogs snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Phoenix in a 14-7 game at Riley Park on Saturday afternoon.

The Citadel (17-15, 6-5 Southern Conference) struck first, scoring once in the second inning on a Johnathan Stokes double.

Elon (19-13, 11-6) tied it in the top of the third when, with two outs, Chris Bresnahan stole home while Quinn Bower swiped second.

The Bulldogs had their big inning in the last of the third, scoring five times to grab a 6-1 lead that it would never relinquish.  The frame began with a double to left from Mason Davis.  After a single put runners on the corners, Joe Jackson singled to right to plate the first run.  A walk loaded the bases before a one-out single deflected off Elon starter Tyler Manez's glove for an infield single that made it a 3-1 game.  After a sacrifice fly made it 4-1, Bailey Rush doubled to right to drive home the final two runs of the inning.

Elon did not go quietly, and pulled back within three with a three-run fourth.  Elon loaded the bases with a hit batter, error and single before Bresnahan lined a RBI single to right-center.  Blaine Bower followed with a RBI single of his own before a two-out wild pitch let Wil Leathers come in with the maroon and gold's fourth run of the day.

After The Citadel extended its edge to 8-4 in the last of the fourth, the Phoenix got a two-out solo homer from Ryan Kinsella in the fifth.  It was Kinsella's SoCon-leading 11th homer of the season.

Trailing 9-5 in the sixth, Elon again got a single run when Antonio Alvarez drew a bases-loaded walk, but the Phoenix would leave three stranded in the frame.

The Bulldogs added two in the seventh on a Jackson homer and another three in the eighth on a Calvin Orth home run to complete their scoring.

Elon pushed across its final run in the top of the eighth when Blaine Bower scored on a bases-loaded double play ball.

For the third time in his career, Bresnahan posted a three-hit game.  He went 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI on Saturday.

Manez, who was making an emergency start for the Phoenix, took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season.  He was charged with six runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings.

The win went to Bulldog starter Logan Cribb (2-2).  Cribb went 5.2 innings and allowed six runs (two earned) on seven hits.

The rubber match of the series will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Riley Park.
