SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- With Southern Conference play wrapping up on Saturday, the Elon Phoenix baseball squad finished the 2013 season tied for second in the league standings and will be seeded third in the upcoming SoCon Baseball Tournament. The maroon and gold will battle host and sixth-seeded Furman at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C.
Elon (27-27) and College of Charleston (31-24) both finished with 18-11 league records, but the Cougars won two of the three games against the Phoenix in March and will be the two seed.
CofC will take on seventh-seeded Georgia Southern (25-30, 13-17) in the finale on day one.
Furman finished with a record of 31-23 overall and was 14-16 in SoCon play.
Western Carolina (38-18, 23-7 SoCon) won the regular-season title and will be the tournament's top seed. The Catamounts will face eighth-seeded Samford (27-28, 12-17) at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The fourth seed went to The Citadel (32-24, 18-12). The Bulldogs will play at 10 a.m. on Wednesday against fifth-seeded Appalachian State (28-22, 13-14).
The top eight teams in the final league standings qualified for the tournament, which features two four-team, double-elimination brackets producing a single-elimination championship game at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 26. The tournament winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Championship.
A free video stream of each tournament game will be available through a link on elonphoenix.com as will a free radio broadcast. Sunday's championship game will be broadcast live on ESPN3 and in select Time Warner Cable markets.
