Phoenix Drops Tournament Opener

Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- In its 2013 Southern Conference Tournament opener against Furman, Elon fell behind early and was unable to rally as the Phoenix fell by a 10-1 score at Fluor Field on Wednesday.

The Paladins (32-23) scored single runs in each of the first three innings.  In the first, a two-out triple to center from Greg Harrison plated Will Muzika.  In the second, Chris Ohmstede homered over the Green Monster in left.  The third run scored as Muzika came home on a Taylor Johnson single in the third.

Furman extended its lead to 8-0 in the top of the seventh.  Three of the runs came in on a bases-loaded double from Alex Abrams.

The Phoenix got on the board in the last of the seventh.  With two outs, Antonio Alvarez singled to right and was able to race to third when the ball was misplayed.  He then scored on a Chris Schaedel single up the middle.

Ryan Kinsella tripled in the first for the Phoenix (27-28) to extend his streak of reaching base safely to 32 consecutive games.

Furman lefty Nate Smith (7-4) was the winner.  Smith kept the Phoenix at bay for 6.1 innings and allowed one run on six hits.  He struck out eight.

Kyle Webb (6-3) suffered his first loss of the year against a Southern Conference opponent.  Webb surrendered seven runs (four earned) on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work.  He became just the ninth pitcher in Elon history to record 200 or more strikeouts in a career.  Webb fanned six on the night and now has 205 in his four seasons in the maroon and gold.

Elon will take on the loser of the College of Charleston vs. Georgia Southern game at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon in an elimination game.
