Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Alex Swim's four hits moved him into a tie for first place on Elon's all-time hits chart and
Sebastian Gomez drove in five runs as the third-seeded Phoenix eliminated the second-seeded College of Charleston Cougars from the 2013 Southern Conference Tournament by an 18-8 margin on Thursday.
Swim tied the record with his 284th career hit when he lined a single through the right side in the top of the eighth. He is now tied with Brian Ingram (2000-03). He is also now tied with Ingram for third on the program's games played chart at 231.
Said Elon head coach
Mike Kennedy, "We scouted the first game, and Georgia Southern was successful throwing breaking balls, so we went with that. Once we got past me over-coaching, we were very successful. I was over-coaching by starting
Nate Young over
Spencer Medick, but Medick came in and did great. I give it to Charleston, but we just came out on top."
The Phoenix got things started in its first at bat as
Quinn Bower drew a walk to start the game and headed to third on a Swim double. With the bases loaded, Gomez singled to left to plate Bower, but Swim was out at third after trying to retreat when he slipped coming around the base. Charleston then got out of the jam with a pickoff and a ground out.
The bottom of the first continued to be interesting. A leadoff walk was followed by a homer to left from Carl Wise as the Cougars grabbed a 2-1 lead. With men on first and second with no outs, Morgan Phillips hit what appeared to be a RBI single to right, but the hitter was ruled out for batting out of order. Elon then escaped further damage, and ended the 43-minute first inning, with a strike out and ground out.
After Wise hit his second two-run homer in the last of the second, Elon stormed back with four in the third. After both Bower and Swim were hit with pitches,
Ryan Kinsella unloaded on the first pitch he saw for a three-run homer to right to tie the game at four. It was Kinsella's 20th home run of the season, just the third time an Elon player has reached the 20-homer mark. That was followed by a shot over the Green Monster off the bat of Gomez which put the maroon and gold in front 5-4. It was the third home run of the year for Gomez.
In the fifth,
Casey Jones singled and moved to second on a one-out single from
Antonio Alvarez before racing home on a
Chris King single to right that upped Elon's lead to 6-4. The Phoenix then loaded the bases when
Wil Leathers was plunked. Bower's swinging bunt single brought home Alvarez before Swim lined a single to left to plate two more. With the bases loaded, Gomez picked up three more RBI with a double down the left field line. He then scored on a Jones single as the Phoenix capped an eight-run inning to lead 13-4.
Bower pushed Elon's lead to 16-4 in the sixth when he hit his first career homer, a three-run shot to left. A
Tyler McVicar sacrifice fly in the seventh made it 17-4. The final Phoenix tally came from Kinsella as he reached on a fielder's choice in the eighth.
Charleston scored three in the seventh and one in the ninth to get its total to eight runs.
The top five in Elon's order combined to go 15-for-24 with 13 runs scored and 16 RBI. Bower matched a career-best with five runs scored as the Phoenix's 18-run outburst marked its second-highest scoring total of the season. It was also the second-highest scoring output for the maroon and gold in a SoCon Tournament game (21 vs. Wofford in 2008).
Medick (7-6) was the winning pitcher after throwing 8.1 innings out of the bullpen. He allowed 10 hits and six runs while fanning five.
Charleston starter Ryan West (4-3) took the loss after giving up five runs on four hits in just two innings.
The Phoenix will advance to play the loser of tonight's game between Furman and Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. on Friday evening.
