URBANA, Ill. – Elon University’s 33rd-ranked men’s tennis tandem of
Cameron Silverman and
Stefan Fortmann saw their stellar 2013 season come to an end on Thursday, May 23, following a 7-6 (3), 6-3, setback to Texas A&M’s eighth-ranked Junior Ore and Jackson Winthrow at the NCAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Championships.
"I am proud of the way Cameron and Stefan both competed and fought today," said Elon head coach
Michael Leonard. "These guys have had an outstanding season together and we look forward to seeing them play together for all of next season. They've been instrumental in helping elevate our program on a national scale and I couldn't be more proud of the year they had."
Trailing by three points, 5-2, in the first set, Silverman and Fortmann completed a monumental comeback by winning the next four points to take a 6-5 advantage to gain momentum. But Ore/Winthrow answered, knotting the match at 6-all to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, the TAMU duo captured a 7-3 decision to win the first set, 7-6, and take an early lead.
Silverman and Fortmann eventually pushed out to a 2-1 lead in the second set to gain early momentum. But Ore and Winthrow fought back again, eventually rallying to win the set, 6-3, and advance in the doubles championship.
Silverman/Fortmann end the 2013 season with an overall record of 16-5 record.
