Phoenix Claims 8-7 Win Over North Carolina A&T

Box Score ELON, N.C. -- Behind a pitching staff that recorded a season-high 16 strikeouts and Quinn Bower's walk-off, bases-loaded single with two outs in the bottom of the 10th, the Elon Phoenix completed a season series sweep of the North Carolina A&T Aggies by an 8-7 score on Tuesday night at Latham Park.

With the game tied at seven following nine innings, Elon (25-26) began it rally thanks to three consecutive two-out walks in the bottom of the 10th.  That brought up Bower who fell behind 0-2 in the count before bouncing a 2-2 pitch back toward the mound.  The ball deflected off the pitcher's glove toward short, but the speedster beat the throw to first to pick up the game-winning RBI as Wil Leathers scored.

After falling behind 3-0 to the Aggies (15-35), the Phoenix closed its deficit to 3-2 in the last of the second.  With Alex Swim on third with two outs, Leathers reached on an infield single to pick up the first RBI of the night for the maroon and gold.  Once a walk and hit batter loaded the bases, Bower drew a walk to force home Elon's second run of the contest.

Elon would tie it in the fifth as Antonio Alvarez's single scored Swim.

In the seventh, the Phoenix soared in front by a 7-5 score when Ryan Kinsella blasted his SoCon-leading 18th homer of the season over the wall in right-center.  Riding home on the shot was Casey Jones who was aboard following a single.

The Phoenix looked to close the game out in the ninth, but the Aggies did not go quietly.  Brandon Wilkerson singled to start the inning before Luke Tendler's single put runners on the corners.  Back-to-back walks forced in the fourth N.C. A&T tally and left the bases full.  A one-out bouncer to third looked like it would just tie the game at five, but the throw to first was dropped and a second run scored to put the Aggies in front 6-5.  A fourth run would score in the inning when the Phoenix picked off a runner at first with men on the corners.  During the rundown, the runner on third raced home to make it a 7-5 game.

Elon responded with two in the last of the ninth to knot it at seven.  Danny Lynch doubled down the left field line with two outs and headed to third on a wild pitch.  Bower's infield single and stolen base put two in scoring position before a second wild pitch made it a 7-6 contest.  Jones then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to force the extra inning.

The 16 strikeouts by the Phoenix were the most for the maroon and gold since a 15-strikeout performance at Davidson on March 26, 2010.  Picking up six of those on Tuesday was Jacob Baker.  Baker tossed four scoreless innings out of the bullpen, allowing just one hit, but did not figure in the decision.

The victory went to Spencer Medick (6-5) who hurled one scoreless frame and fanned two.

Tim Jones (1-3) took the loss after he was charged with three runs on three hits in 1.2 innings.

Elon will conclude the regular season with a three-game SoCon series against Samford at Latham Park this weekend.  The set gets underway with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch on Friday.
