CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Spencer Medick allowed just two runs on nine hits in a complete-game effort against sixth-ranked Virginia, but the Elon Phoenix fell to the Cavaliers by a 2-0 margin in the winner's bracket of the Charlottesville Regional on Saturday night in front of a raucous crowd of 4,434.
Elon now sits at 33-29, while Virginia is 49-10.
“I’m really proud of our effort,” said Elon coach
Mike Kennedy. “I thought we played hard, I thought we competed well and we had some opportunities. That’s what you want to have in a venue like this, and I think our guys understand that we’ll get better from it.”
The complete game was the first of Medick's Elon career and the third for the Phoenix this season. Medick (7-7) walked three and struck out four while throwing 82 of his 129 pitches for strikes.
Virginia's Scott Silverststein (10-1) was the winning pitcher. He tossed six scoreless frames, striking out six and allowing six hits. Kyle Crockett recorded the final six outs to pick up his 12th save of the season.
After both squads worked out of bases loaded jams unscathed in the third, Virginia got on the board in the fourth. With one out, Nick Howard reached on an infield single, stole second and headed to third on a wild pitch before scoring the game's first run on a double down the left field line from Kenny Towns. Towns then scored to make it 2-0 when Nate Irving singled to center.
The Phoenix stranded 10 runners on the night - including three in the third and two in both the fifth and sixth innings.
At the plate for Elon,
Alex Swim notched three of the squad's eight hits.
The Phoenix will play an elimination game against UNC Wilmington at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The winner of that game will play Virginia at 6 p.m. tomorrow evening.
