ELON, N.C. – Elon's The Night of the Phoenix event surpassed its goal on Friday, Feb. 18, raising over $162,000 for student-athlete scholarships. The annual event, now in its seventh year, continues to exceed the previous year's event record. The Night of the Phoenix has now raised over $750,000 in annual scholarship support for the Phoenix Club. The Phoenix Club Advisory Board and Elon's Department of Athletics coordinates the event.
Following dinner and a lively silent action consisting of over 150 items for bid, Elon Director of Athletics
Dave Blank offered opening remarks and introduced senior women's tennis player Jordan Johnston, who shared her thoughts and experiences on being an Elon student-athlete.
Following Johnston's comments and a video featuring women's basketball's
Kelsey Harris, men's cross country's
Luis Vargas and men's soccer's
Jason Waterman, many Elon student-athletes entered the room to thank those in attendance for their participation in the night's activities and for all of their support for scholarships.
"We are grateful for all of the support and generosity from the Elon community for this fantastic event," Blank commented. "It was great to see so many people come together to support the education and experiences of our student-athletes. We appreciate the hard work and effort from the Phoenix Club Advisory Board that helps make this event a success."
Students from Elon's Department of Performing Arts provided the entertainment for this year's event. In just under 20 years, Elon's Music Theatre program has grown to be one of the top music theatre training programs in the country. Taught by dynamic professors with a combination of years of industry experience and a passion for teaching, Elon's music theatre training focuses on the individual performer, with strengths in all three areas of concentration: acting, singing, and dance.
