BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Elon University women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision today, April 5, on the road against the Samford Bulldogs. The Phoenix now sits at 4-2 in Southern Conference play with two matches remaining.
The strong Samford side extended its home winning streak to 10 straight matches and improved to 6-1 in the Southern Conference, sitting in a tie with Chattanooga for second in the conference standings. Elon is in a tie for fourth place with UNC Greensboro, who fell today against Chattanooga. The Phoenix and Spartans will meet Thursday, April 10, in Greensboro.
Elon fell behind the Bulldogs early with losses on doubles court Nos. 1 and 3.
Jordan Johnston and
Barbora Lazarova dropped a tightly contested match on No. 1 doubles while
Bryn Khoury and
Taylor Casey fell 8-1 on No. 3. The duo of
Frida Jansaker and
Maria Camara Ruiz picked up an 8-6 victory on court No. 2.
Samford continued its run into singles play with victories on court Nos. 1, 3, 5 and 6 to clinch the match.
Jansaker and Khoury picked up Elon's only points of the match, as Jansaker earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory on court No. 2 and Khoury picked up a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win on court No. 4. Jansaker has now won 11 of her last 12 singles matches dating back to Jan. 25 against Kansas State.
Johnston, Lazarova and Casey were each beat in straight sets on court Nos. 1, 3 and 5, respectively, but Camara Ruiz won her second set to force a third set tiebreaker. The junior came up just short, though, in losing the super tiebreaker 10-6.
Elon returns to action tomorrow afternoon against Chattanooga. The match is scheduled for 12 p.m.
