GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Elon University women's tennis team opened play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Kickoff with a 4-0 loss to Florida Jan. 24 at Scott Linder Stadium in Gainesville, Fla.
 
The Phoenix played as the four seed in the four-team bracket while the host Gators earned the top seed as the second-ranked team in the nation.
 
Florida's top doubles duo of Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan, ranked seventh in the nation, defeated Maria Camara Ruiz and Barbora Lazarova, 6-1, on court No. 1. Elon's No. 2 pairing of Olivia Lucas and Taylor Casey were topped, 6-2, by the 17^th-ranked pairing of Josie Kuhlman and Peggy Porter.
 
The doubles match on court No. 3 between Elon's Kamilla Beisenova and Erica Braschi and Florida's Brianna Morgan and Spencer Liang went unfinished.
 
The Gators took a 1-0 lead into singles play, where they picked up wins on court Nos. 1, 4 and 6. Austin defeated Lucas, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, and Porter picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Camara to make it 3-0. Florida clinched the match with Stefani Stojic's 6-0, 6-1 triumph over Casey on court No. 6.
 
Elon didn't make it easy for Florida putting up tough matches that went unfinished due to Florida clinching it prior to these finishes. In singles play Kamilla Beisenova was tied up with Spencer Liang 6-6 when the match was called. In No.3 play Erica Braschi was down 0-1 in the second set against 43^rd-nationally ranked Belinda Woolcock. While in doubles play Erica Braschi and Kamilla Beisenova were down 3-4 to Brianna Morgan and Spencer Liang.
 
Elon falls to 1-2 on the season with the loss and will play in the consolation match of the ITA Kickoff at 12 p.m. Jan. 25 against either No. 61 Georgia State or No. 68 Maryland.
