#66 Elon Swept by Undefeated Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – The 66th-ranked Elon University men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Old Dominion Saturday, Feb. 7, at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center in Norfolk, Va.
 
Juan Madrid and Brian Kowalski each won a set during singles competition and Kowalski won a thrilling doubles match alongside partner Stefan Fortmann, but Old Dominion prevailed to improve to a perfect 4-0 on the season.
 
Old Dominion won the doubles point with victories on two of the three doubles courts. Jordan Kaufman and Neal Port began play with a 6-2 setback on court No. 3.
 
Madrird and Robert Lindgren were locked in a tight battle with Carlos Lopez Villa and Theophile Lanthiez on court No. 2, taking a 6-5 lead in the set but ultimately falling, 7-6, in a 7-1 deciding tiebreaker.
 
Elon's doubles duo of Fortmann and Kowalski picked up an impressive victory at the top doubles spot, fighting back from a 5-2 deficit to win 7-6 after securing the tiebreaker, 7-4. The win marked the first of the season for Fortmann and Kowalski at No. 1 doubles after an 0-3 start to the year.
 
In singles play, 43rd-ranked Lopez Villa topped Fortmann, 6-0, 6-1, to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead. Adam Moundir followed with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Josh Luck to give ODU a 3-0 advantage. Javier Jover Maestre clinched the match for the Monarchs after securing a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kaufman at No. 5 singles.
 
The Phoenix was locked in tight matches on singles court Nos. 3, 4 and 6. Lindgren dropped his first set, 6-0, but battled back and broke Michael Weindl's serve to take a 5-4 lead in the second set. Weindl went on to win the second set 7-6 after winning the tiebreaker 7-3.
 
Kowalski won the first set over Lanthiez at No. 4 singles, but was forced to retire early in the second set.
 
Madrid took an early lead with a 7-5 first set win against Zvonimir Podvinski, but dropped the second set, 6-1, and the third set super tiebreaker, 10-5. The loss was the first this season for Madrid in singles competition.
 
Elon drops to 0-5 with the loss. The Phoenix is next in action Feb. 8, when the team travels to Richmond, Va., to face Virginia Commonwealth. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Thalhimer Tennis Center.
