WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Elon University women's tennis team bounced back with a 6-1 win over UNCW today, March 12, at the UNCW Courts in Wilmington, N.C. The Phoenix improves to 6-5 with the win, its fifth victory in its last six matches.
"UNCW is a well-coached team and we knew we were going to have to fight for every point," said Elon head coach
Elizabeth Anderson.
The Phoenix did just that, beginning in doubles play at No. 3 where
Erica Braschi and
Taylor Casey extended their winning streak to five with an 8-1 win over Alix Thedossiou and Hollie Champion.
Barbora Lazarova and
Kirsten Ward finished off Christine Kharkevitch and Annika Sillanpaa, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point for the Phoenix.
Olivia Lucas and
Maria Camara Ruiz dropped an 8-4 decision to Miller Hales and Alyssa Ritchie in the other doubles match.
Elon fell in its first singles match on court No. 2 where Alyssa Ritchie defeated
Kirsten Ward, 6-2, 6-2. But the Phoenix fought back from the setback taking the next five points in singles play.
On court No. 1,
Olivia Lucas had a tough win over Annika Sillanpaa with a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4 decision.
Barbora Lazarova defeated Christine Kharkevitch on court No. 3, 6-2, 6-2. On court No. 4,
Erica Braschi won 7-5, 6-3 over Alix Theodossiou, while
Taylor Casey captured a win over Miller Hales in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Maria Camara Ruiz also saw a tiebreaker set against Hamilton Lovett with a 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 finish capturing the final point for the Phoenix.
Elon comes back to Jimmy Powell Tennis Center with a track of three-straight home matches. The first being this Sunday, March 15, at 1 p.m. against George Washington.
