ELON, N.C. – Tied 3-3 heading into doubles play, the Elon University women's tennis team was competitive on all three courts but fell short in a 4-3 loss to College of Charleston today, April 10, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Elon falls to 13-7 on the season and 7-2 at home with the loss. CofC improves to 11-12 with the win, the Cougars' seventh straight victory.

"We competed very well against a very good College of Charleston team," Elon head coach Elizabeth Anderson said. "We fought and we gave it our all out there. I think we can learn from it and be a little more disciplined, but I think it was a really hard-fought match and I'm proud of the way the players competed today."

The match began with singles play due to forecasted rain. The Phoenix and Cougars split the six singles matches, as Elon picked up wins on court Nos. 1, 2 and 3. CofC won matches on court Nos. 4, 5 and 6, including a three-set victory on 4 that tied the match 3-3 and forced doubles play.

Taylor Casey and Erica Braschi picked up an 8-5 win against the Cougars' Brooke McAmis and Grace Baker at No. 3 doubles, but CofC triumphed on court No. 2 and outlasted Elon in a tiebreaker on court No. 1 to clinch the match.

Kirsten Ward won her second match of the season playing in the top singles position, a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory that gave Elon a 2-0 lead. Olivia Lucas put the Phoenix on the board with a 6-4, 6-0 win against McAmis.

Barbora Lazarova stretched Elon's lead to 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles, but CofC followed with a win at No. 6 to make it 3-2. Erica Braschi was locked in a tight battle with the Cougars' Katherine Schofield, but Schofield won the match, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-6), to even the score at 3-3.

Up next: Elon hosts North Carolina Central tomorrow, April 11, on Senior Day. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. Lazarova and fellow senior Maria Camara Ruiz will be recognized prior to the match.

How it happened: Schofield and Jenny Falcone defeated Ward and Lazarova at No. 1 doubles, 8-7 (7-5), to clinch the match for the Cougars. The match began with singles play and was tied, 3-3, heading into doubles.

Notes: Lucas has won seven straight singles matches and is 9-1 in her last 10 … Ward has won five straight singles matches… Braschi and Casey have won six straight doubles matches and are 9-1 in their last 10 … CofC has won six of the last seven matchups between the two schools dating back to 2010
