ELON, N.C. – Sixteen days away from its season opener on Aug. 21, the Elon University women's soccer team reported for preseason camp on Wednesday, Aug. 5. The Phoenix women's soccer program is the first Elon team to get underway this fall, with several other programs reporting in the next week.
"We're thrilled to get underway," said Elon head coach
Chris Neal. "We've been looking forward to this day for a long time and it was tremendous to see the investment and hard work each person put in during the summer to be ready for today and the start of the season."
Going into its second season in the Colonial Athletic Association, the Elon women's soccer program returns 22 letterwinners to this year's squad, including team captains
Mel Insley,
Taylor Glenn,
Samantha Burch and
Alexis de Groot.
Elon welcomes a total of 10 new players to this year's team, in addition to a new assistant coach in
Henry Zapata.
Elon opens the season with four straight road matches, beginning with a trip to Charleston, S.C., on Aug. 21 to face Charleston Southern. The Phoenix plays its first match at Rudd Field on Sept. 4 against North Florida.
