ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's and women's cross country teams took home the team titles in their respective races at its annual home meet, the Elon Invitational on Saturday morning, Sept. 12, at the Phoenix Cross Country Course.
The Phoenix women won the Class A Division I title over North Carolina A&T with 17 points total compared to 41 for the Aggies in the women's 5K race. The Elon men's harriers also beat out NC A&T in the Class A Division I with 18 points while the Aggies posted 42. In the Class B division on the women's side, Mount Olive won the title with 25 points, just edging out Catawba who had 33. In the men's Class B division, Mount Olive had 15 total points to win the crown.
Senior
Elyse Bierut was the top finisher in the women's race for Elon after crossing the line as the runner-up overall. The Rocky River, Ohio, native clocked in a time of 18:13 in her first race of the year. Sophomore
Brigid Brennan was the next runner to cross the line for Elon in third overall with her time of 18:58 while rookie
Bridgette Harrell was fourth with her time of 19:00.
Coralea Geraniotis (sixth, 19:22),
Emma Brown (ninth, 19:52) and
Sabina Bains (11
th, 20:04) also competed for Elon in the race.
On the men's side, Elon's
Sam Geha was the runner-up in the men's 8K run with a time of 26:08 while rookie
Nick Ciolkowski was third with a time of 26:10. Senior
Reed Payne was the third Elon runner to cross the finish line in fourth overall and a time of 26:26.
Ian O'Leary (13
th, 26:48),
Ryan Gwaltney (17
th, 27:11),
Greg Paugh (18
th, 27:17) all finished in the top-20 for Elon.
The Phoenix heads to Cary, N.C., to compete at the adidas XC Challenge on Sept. 18, at the course at WakeMed Soccer Park.
