Meet the Phoenix: Chris Humphreys Q&A

With a lot of new faces and a couple players returning for the 2016 season, we will publish a Q&A leading up to home matches for fans to get a chance to meet players on the Elon University men's tennis squad. This week we feature team co-captain, Chris Humphreys.

Humphrey's File
Full Name: Christopher Steven Humphreys
Birthdate: January, 18, 1995
Hometown: Albuquerque, New Mexico
Class: Junior

Who would you say is the best table tennis player on the team this year?
Probably me.

Who would you say is the best soccer player?
I think that's me.

Ultimate Frisbee?
That would be me again.

Is it safe to say then that you are the best athlete on the team?
(Chuckles) Let's just say that I'm a chameleon; if I'm not the best athlete, I'm definitely a jack of all trades. (Laughs)

Last week you wont the match that clinched the victory against VCU. Describe what emotions you felt as your teammates rush the court to embrace you after the last point was completed:
My first emotion was relief for finally finishing the match and immediately after that it was just pure joy celebrating an awesome win with a great group of guys.

What do you like the most about Elon?
Playing tennis here and representing something larger than myself. Playing for a group of guys like this as well as an amazing coaching staff makes me enjoy my time here that much more than I think I could anywhere else.

With six Freshmen on this year's team, do you feel like you're mentoring or picking up pieces?
It is definitely not like picking up prices because all six of them are really good players and bring a lot of energy and talent to our team. But there are times where I try and relate to them and how it was being a freshmen and try and help get through some of the challenges you can face during your first year here.

Tell us one thing that most people outside of your family/close friends don't know about you:
I am a die hard 90's hip hop fan.

Who is your "celebrity crush?"
Scarlett Johansson

If you could have dinner with any three individuals, (personalities, historical figures, fictitious characters, etc.) who would it be and why?
Eminem, Kobe Bryant, and Slash (lead guitarist of Guns N' Roses). I think they are all geniuses at what they do and I would love to pick their brain to see how they became the best in their respected professions.

What has been your most cherished memory on or off-the-court from your time at Elon?
Definitely beating #7 Duke and winning the conference tournament later that year. Hard to beat either of those memories. (Elon opened the 2014 campaign by defeating then ranked #7 Duke 4-3 in one of the greatest upsets in college tennis history. The team went on to claim the conference title and achieved its highest ranking in program history: #39)

If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?
Mind reader. I'm always so curious to know what other people are thinking.
