FINAL RESULTS
ELON, N.C. – The Elon University men's tennis team held off William & Mary to secure a 5-2 victory on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
The Phoenix won a tight doubles point and claimed three-set victories on each of the top three singles courts to win the match. Elon improves to 3-5 with the victory and William & Mary drops to 3-4.
"This is a hard-fought win," Elon head coach
Michael Leonard said. "Proud of our guys. This is probably the best we've competed from beginning to end this season."
The Highlights
Chris Humphreys and
Petar Tomic clinched a tightly contested doubles point with a win in a tiebreaker to give Elon a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The duo fell behind 5-2 before storming back to tie the match 6-6 and force a tiebreaker, which the Phoenix went on to win 8-6.
Mario Paccini and
Felipe Sarrasague began doubles with a 6-3 victory on court No. 1, the pairing's third straight victory.
Tomic earned a quick 6-0, 6-4 singles victory over the Tribe's Alec Miller to give Elon a 2-0 lead. Michael Ruamthong earned the Tribe's first point of the day with a three-set win on court No. 6 to make it 2-1.
Felipe Sarrasague's 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 win over Aidan Talcott at No. 1 singles stretched Elon's advantage to 3-1.
Salvador Mijares clinched the match with a decisive 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win on court No. 3.
Paccini finished off a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory on court No. 2 before William & Mary won the remaining match in three sets on court No. 5.

Continuing its four-match homestand, Elon will host James Madison on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 1 p.m. The Phoenix is 2-0 against JMU, winning 7-0 in each of the last two seasons.
