Elon Defeats Longwood 6-1 to Complete Perfect Homestand

Final Results

ELON, N.C. –
With a dominating performance Sunday afternoon, Feb. 19, at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, Elon University men's tennis capped a four-match homestand with a 6-1 victory over Longwood to finish the swing with a 4-0 mark.

"We had to make a few changes this weekend but I'm really proud of the way we overcame those changes to the lineup," said Elon head coach Michael Leonard. "We didn't necessarily start the season the way we wanted to but to come home and win all four matches is big as we keep moving through February."

The victory evens Elon's record at 5-5 this year after opening the season with a 1-5 record through six road matches. With the loss, Longwood drops its first match of the 2017 season and now stands at 3-1.

The Rundown
Elon opened the afternoon with a quick 6-1 win by Salvador Mijares and Neal Port at No. 3 doubles. The Phoenix then went on to sweep the doubles point with a pair of 6-3 wins by Petar Tomic and Chris Humphreys at No. 1 and Felipe Sarrasague and Taylor Foote at No. 2.

The Phoenix continued its dominating afternoon when it took five of the six singles matches on the way to the win. All six matches were finished in two sets with Felipe Osses-Konig getting things off and running with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4. He was shortly followed by Humphreys' 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5 and Sarrasague clinched the match for Elon with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1.

Though the Lancers got one back to make it 4-1 after a win at No. 3, Mijares finished off a 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 2 and Louis Rico completed the day with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 6.

Notes
- Sarrasague's singles win marks his fourth in a row, which is the longest active winning streak on the team.
- Tomic and Humphreys have now won four doubles matches in a row together. The two played last week at No. 2 doubles before moving up to No. 1 this weekend against JMU and Longwood.
