Women’s Tennis Prepares for Big Weekend

ELON, N.C. – The Jimmy Powell Tennis Center will play host to three Elon University women's tennis matches this weekend. The action kicks off Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. when The Phoenix takes on the Eagles of North Carolina Central, followed by a match up against the Generals of Washington & Lee at 1:30 p.m., who are currently ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division III.

Elon then returns to the court at 1 p.m. on Sunday to take on the Eagles of Winthrop, to cap off their three-match weekend.

KIDS' DAY
Elon will also be hosting Kids' Day Saturday, including a free tennis clinic at 11:30 a.m., a bounce house from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., as well as prizes and giveaways.

LAST TIME OUT
Elon returned earlier from a four game road swing where they went 2-2, winning matches at UNCW and Richmond, while falling short at #3 North Carolina and #42 VCU.

The Phoenix took down UNCG on Tuesday, winning 6-1, with Alex Koniaev clinching the match at the number six singles position to help Elon remain a perfect 6-0 at home.

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday will be the ninth meeting against North Carolina Central dating back to 2008. Elon is undefeated against the Eagles with a record of 8-0.

The Phoenix has faced the Generals of Washington & Lee only once. The lone meeting coming in February of 2015, with Elon earning a 7-0 win.

Elon will face Winthrop for the seventh time on Sunday and for the first time since 2003. The Eagles lead the all time series 5-1. Elon's lone victory against Winthrop was on March 11, 2001 when the Phoenix defeated Winthrop 4-3 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

FINDING HER GROVE
Olivia Lucas, who is working her way back from an injury, has played her way from the number four singles position up to the number two spot. She is currently in the midst of a three match winning streak, hoping to extend that this weekend.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITON
North Carolina Central has yet to notch a win this season, coming to the weekend 0-8.

Washington & Lee on the other hand, have yet to lose this season. The Generals have rattled off eight straight to start the season undefeated and work their way to the No. 16 ranking in NCAA division III.

Winthrop comes in at 10-3, having won two in a row. The Eagles share a common opponent with the Phoenix, both defeating Radford 7-0 earlier in the season.

HEAD COACH ELIZABETH ANDERSON
Elizabeth Anderson is entering her 13th season as head coach of the Phoenix. Anderson earned her first-ever year accolade, after she was named the 2016 CAA Coach of the Year. She has led Elon to five straight seasons of 14 or more wins and guided the program to its first NCAA Tournament in 2014.

UP NEXT
The Phoenix will close out their five match home stand on Thursday, March 16 against Barton College, before taking to the road to compete at Hawaii on March 22.
