RICHMOND, Va. – Elon University men's golf junior
William Harwood has been named the Colonial Athletic Association's Men's Golfer of the Week today, Oct. 17, as announced by the league office.
The Columbia, S.C. native went three-under in the final round of the Fourth Annual Elon Phoenix Invitational, hosted by the Phoenix at Alamance Country Club on Oct. 15-16, to finish with a 10-under 203 for the tournament. It marked his second career tournament win while his combined total is a new 54-hole career low and his score-to-par of -10 is also a new career best. The junior tallied 14 birdies with 36 pars during the course of the three rounds.
The junior was tied for the lead through the first two rounds of play after opening Monday with a four-under par 67 to tie for second place. He then shot a 68 in round two to move up a spot in the standings. He set a 36-hole career low of 135, topping his previous best of 137 posted in last year's Phoenix Invitational.
Harwood's effort also aided the Phoenix in defending its team title. Entering the final day of the tournament with an eight-under 560, the Phoenix combined for a 283 to hold onto the poll position at 843 (-9).
This marks the third time in his career that Harwood has earned the weekly distinction. During his freshman season, he was tabbed CAA Men's Co-Golfer of the Week on March 15, 2017 after winning his first-career individual title and helping the Phoenix claim a tie for second at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. He posted a final round of 71 (E) and carded a final 54-hole score of three-over par (73-72-71--216) for the tournament.
Harwood was also named Golfer of the Week on Feb. 14, 2018 after finishing tied for sixth at the UNCG Martin Downs Collegiate. He opened the tournament with a career-low 66 to take the individual lead at -6. He then posted rounds of 73 and 72 to finish at five-under (211).
Elon will finish its fall schedule at the Pinetree Intercollegiate, hosted by Kennesaw State on Oct. 22-23 at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Ga.
