ELON, N.C. – In their return to the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center on Thursday, March 15, the Elon University women's tennis team dropped a highly contested 4-3 decision to the University of Alabama – Birmingham.
HIGHLIGHTS
In doubles, Lucas and
Montana Moore got things started for the Phoenix. The pair won their doubles match in dominant fashion on court three, defeating Hana Sisirak and Dominka Hrablova 6-0.
Despite the opening victory, the Blazers bested the Phoenix in the remaining doubles matches, winning 6-2 on court one and 6-3 on court 2 to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
In singles, Lucas's impressive play continued. She strolled to a quick 6-2, 6-0 win on court one to tie things up for the Phoenix.
Kirsten Ward followed suit on court 6, winning her match 6-4, 6-2 to guide Elon to a 2-1 lead.
UAB responded with a victory on court two where Marlene Herrmann defeated
Suzanne Zenoni 6-4, 6-3 to knot things up at 2-2.
Elsewhere in singles,
Maria Paraja won a first set tiebreak 7-6 (7-3) followed by quick 6-4 second set victory to put the Phoenix back ahead 3-2.
The final two matches of the day both took three sets to decide. On court five, Moore won her first set 6-1, before falling 6-2, 6-2 in the following two.
UAB would clinch the match on court four, where
Alex Koniaev was eventually bested in a 3 set marathon by a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The Phoenix will return to action next Friday, March 23 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at 1:00 pm to take on Johnson C. Smith.
