5/20/2019 8:40:00 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. - Elon University men's tennis senior Felipe Sarrasague stuck with Andy Andrade of the University of Florida in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship on Monday, May 20, but Sarrasague's career as a Phoenix ended with a 1-6, 6-7 (3-7) loss at the USTA National Campus.

Sarrasague finishes his senior season with a 22-9 mark in singles action for the fall and spring combined. The senior was ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national rankings as high as No. 96 this season and is currently ranked at No. 104 in the most recent rankings. Sarrasague finishes his career with 59 dual-match singles victories, which places him in a tie for fourth on the program's all-time list with Chase Helpingstine '11.

After dropping a quick opening set, Sarrasague and Andrade were neck-and-neck in the second set as the senior was able to force a tiebreaker. However, Andrade prevailed holding off Sarrasague with a 7-3 victory in the second-set tiebreaker to clinch a spot in the round of 32. Andrade is currently ranked No. 59 in the latest ITA Singles Rankings.

Sarrasague concludes his career as one of the best to ever don the maroon and gold. This season, Sarrasague was named the CAA Player of the Year for the second straight year. He became just the eighth player in conference history to earn CAA Player of the Year honors in back-to-back seasons. He was also the first Elon player to earn back-to-back player of the year honors since Cameron Silverman '14 was named the Southern Conference Player of the Year in 2013 and 2014.  Sarrasague is the fourth player in Elon's Division I era – all of which have come in the last seven seasons – to earn conference Player of the Year. In addition to Silverman's back-to-back honors, Stefan Fortmann took the CAA Player of the Year honor in Elon's first year as a member of the conference in 2015.

Additionally, he was named to the first-team All-CAA singles squad for the fourth consecutive season and earned the All-CAA doubles team accolades for the first time in his career as a senior. In his final season, Sarrasague helped lead Elon to its first-ever CAA Championship and first NCAA Tournament berth since 2014.
